Fever, Assurance, Science Student Make Google’s “Top Trending Songs Of 2018”
Some of Nigeria’s top hit songs have made it to Google’s Top Trending songs of 2018!
Google has released its 2018 most-searched list which shows how different parts of the world searched on Google in 2018. In Nigeria, Google released Top Trending Songs amongst other trends that went through their search engine and these songs are from artistes that are already dominating the Afrobeats scene. These artistes, according to Google have the most searched songs in Nigeria searched by Nigerians and they are none other than Wizkid, Davido, Olamide, Burna Boy and Kizz Daniel.
This list was announced on Wednesday, the 12th of December with four of Davido’s songs, three Wizkid’s, two Olamide’s and One for Burna. Kizz Daniel also made it to this list through his collaboration with Davido on One Ticket, but then again, One Ticket is a song by Kizz, not Davido, so Kizz owns that spot for himself, yea?
The most searched song, Fever by Wizkid came with no surprise considering the steamy visuals for the song with stew queen, Tiwa Savage while taking the second place is the Chioma themed song, Assurance which is also not surprising considering the song birthed a trend on its own for couples who were either looking to be assured or wanting to assure, either ways, the song was a hit.

Lil Kesh and Olamide
Nigerians on social media are not sparing any words on Olamide and Lil Kesh concerning their new song, Logo Benz released on the 19th of December which is an evident promotion of the ill the society is presently facing.
The song was released at a time where female panties are being used for money ritual and some of the lyrics of this song encourage such where the singer, Olamide stated that if praying to God doesn’t provide cash, then it is right to resort to money ritual. The lyrics further highlight the present issues of the country, encourage the perpetration of such barbaric act when they said the new logo for Benz is now female panties as using it for rituals can provide enough wealth to get that.
Reacting to this song, Nigerians have called out the singers who they stated have consistently released songs that promote ills of the society, from drugs to violence through songs like Wo, Science Students and the likes and although some of these songs have received support from some of his fans who felt he was being misunderstood, this time, no lines were blur and almost everyone is against the song, whatever inspired it, the lyrics and especially the artistes for not putting enough thought into the effect his music might have on people.
A descriptive statement that stands out is a Twitter account that describes Olamide as cancer to the Nigerian music industry and ending it with his disappointment that the singer is canceled to him.
For now, Olamide has not made any comment to these reactions neither has Lil Kesh, but one would wonder what comment can explain the intention behind this song and the lyrics.

Another rapper, Rhatti, has gained the attention of Nigerian indigenous rapper, Phyno and the Ezege singer didn’t just notice him, he has gone ahead to sign him to PentHauze Music.
Rhatti aa he is popularly known is also a student of Nnamdi Azikiwe University and he seems to already have a modest fan base for someone whose song isn’t mainstream yet. He was initially spotted by Olamide after he did a cover of Olamide’s new track ‘Poverty Die’ and from a look of his Instagram page, one would see that the singer has been putting in the work for a while now, releasing singles while studying.
Phyno posted works of the rapper on his page where the rapper was seen doing other covers like Motigbana, another video of him expressing his love for Tiwa Savage and he also posted the rapper’s birthday photo serving as the post of welcome which he captioned;

Olamide
Olamide has come out to defend the controversial Logo Benz by Lil Kesh which he was featured on with awareness being his operating word.
The Motigbana singer posted on Twitter on the 21st of December that he had no idea there was something known as too much awareness because all he believed they were doing with such song is to create awareness on what is presently going on in the society by making that the subject of their song.
The singer went ahead to apologize for creating too much awareness but also defending his action by saying issues like these are also talked about in the movies and the reactions are different.
Logo Benz is for the 3rd party to have a glimpse into the current state of youths in our society. (Runs girls x runs boys) “ I’m not sure if there’s anything like 2 much awareness, but pardon me if there is. It’s all over the news, it’s always been in movies, don’t box musicians.

This explanation is definitely not being accepting by Twitter users that have come across it or fans that also love him as they further expressed their anger at not just his explanation, but on the song which seems to be promoting the ills of the society but they’re other fans who seem to be in support of his explanation, justifying it with thesame reason Olamide did.
Awareness is usually done to bring positive things to light (e.g cervical cancer screening) and educate people on the need to stop wrong practices e.g FGM.

Wizkid and Olamide On OLIC 5 Stage
Olamide Live in Concert was a huge success at the Eko Convention Centre on the 23rd of December 2018 where lovers of the Olamide came to experience the artiste Live.
The greatest surprise that’ll leave fans talking for weeks was Wizkid showing up at OLIC right after his concert, an appearance nobody expected considering the Starboy was also having his own show at the Eko Atlantic the same day.
The concert was full of talented artistes, from the YBNL Mafia who gave their various performances to upcoming acts who also had their time in the spotlight.
Other surprising performances were from Ric Hassani who serenaded the crowd with Believe, Good Girl LA who gave a sensual performance and mashup of songs from top Nigerian acts, Chinko Ekun who came with Able God, Mr. Real came with Legbegbe, Praiz played the piano while he performed Folashade, YBNL Princess, Temmie Ovwansa performed her Holy water-themed song while Adekunle Gold who gave a golden performance of Ire and My Life, Chike gave a beautiful performance of beautiful people, Walter Spear heart who held the crowd spellbound with his performance as he beautifully plays the Harp, you might want to watch his performance on our Instagram.
Olamide’s performance was worth every wait as the singer took fans to hits from way back until he Journeyed all the way to poverty. The rapper with a live band delivered a stellar performance of his song, crowning the performance with the dancers who expressed effectively the story his songs tell with the rhythmic movement of their bodies. Seeing their various costumes and interpretation of each song and how easy Olamide flowed with them, one could tell their level understanding of art and performance through it all.
Other artistes who came on stage to support Baddo include Timaya who surprised the fan, Phyno whose presence wasn’t a surprise considering how close he is to Olamide, Vintage Band who after their mash-up of great songs, backed Olamide’s voice as he sings to the resounding instrumentals.
The surprise for the night was Wizkid storming the stage at the beginning of his song with Olamide, Kana and that got the crowd roaring! They briefly performed Kana after which he flowed into Fever then performed Ojuelegba and ended with the hottest song of 2018, Soco.
There had been series of arguments and disagreements between Wizkid’s fans and Olamide’s fans as they decide whose show they’ll be going for on the 23rd. This date clash didn’t seem like good news for Olamide and because of this clash, fans have assumed there is a competition going on between artistes and that’s what Wizkid’s present at the show proved. It showed the fans that music is for everyone and the sky is big enough for everyone to successfully fly and not clash. It also showed fans that it’s okay to support who the world is trying to make you see as a competition because they don’t become a competition until you see them as that and these two stars, Wizkid and Olamide, see themselves as brothers in the industry who feel confident in seeing the other grow and we hope their fans will watch them and learn.

2018 was all about the music for Olamide. He started the year with the smash hit, “Science Student“, a song which sparked major controversy due to its lyrics and how it seemingly promoted drug abuse, something Olamide firmly denied.
Olamide continued the streak with hits like “Kana” (ft. Wizkid), Motigbana“, as well as mega collaborations with Timaya (Bam Bam), Phyno (Onyeoma) and Naira Marley (Issa Goal).
For me, Olamide‘s greatest highlight of the year has to be the reinvention of YBNL.
Olamide signed 5 acts in total this year alone, the biggest mass signing in the industry. New members of the YBNL MaFia family include Limerick, Lyta, Picazo, Yomi Blaze & Fireboy DML. Together, they released the YBNL MaFia Family album earlier this month, and they all appeared in Olamide‘s “Poverty Die” video, another hit in the making.
Could the YBNL MaFia Family – led by Baddo himself – become the new force to reckon with? We’ll find out in 2019 and beyond.

Nigerian indigenous rapper, Lord of Ajasa has announced his recuperation after word was revealed last week, 14th of January, that the rapper urgently needed financial support for medical attention as his ill health due to peptic ulcer was deteriorating. This announcement was made by Alariwo who couldn’t be silent while the rapper suffers in silence, hence he has posted this on his Instagram account;
“My dear colleagues, Our brother, Legendary Nigerian Afro hip hop artist and pioneer of Yoruba rap, Segun Osaniyi aka lord of ajasa is critically ill and needs funds to undergo a peptic Ulcer operation…He’s currently at ikorodu general hospital, where he’s receiving treatment…However, he needs to be moved to a better and more equipped hospital so as to get the BEST medical attention…
“I got a message from his wife begging me to speak to his colleagues to save her husband…When I called ajasa earlier today, he ajasa confirmed that the story is true…Let’s all come together as fast as we can to help out as nothing is too small…Supporting him financially to stay alive is the best remedy than saying sorry, which we reject in JESUS name. Send your donation to his account details: 0015198342 Osaniyi Olusegun GTB…GOD,”
A week after, the rapper had an interview with Punch Newspaper and revealed that he is presently recuperating in a private hospital in Ikeja. He went on to expressed gratitude to some Nigerian artistes such as Olamide, 9ice, Alariwo, Gbenga Adeyinka and many others that came through for him as their support is what is helping him get better treatment.
“Right now, I am at a private hospital in Ikeja (Lagos). I wasn’t getting proper care at the General Hospital Ikorodu, Lagos, and since people have begun to support me, I can now afford to get treated at a better hospital. I cannot mention the names of all the people who have assisted me because they are very many.
“However, some that I can mention are Gbenga Adeyinka, Alariwo, Jah Bless, Ice K (of Artquake), 9ice, Olamide, among others. Though some people are saying the support is not enough but it is whatever they have that they would give me. All the funds I’ve got have not been able to take care of all my bills. There are so many fans that have assisted as well; people that I don’t even know. I really appreciate the outpouring of love,”
On how the pain started and how he is presently receiving treatment, the veteran rapper stated that surgery, according to the doctor might no longer be necessary as his body seems responsive to treatment.
“I was supposed to undergo surgery but the doctor said I’m improving; so, I may no longer need it. According to them, I have been responding well to treatment and I am getting much better. I started feeling the pain on January 1 and I thought it was the usual occurrence because I had been experiencing such pain for some time. Usually, the pain would just come and go. But this time, it lasted longer. Suddenly, I could not even stand or walk. Then, on the first Sunday of January, I was rushed to the hospital; I nearly collapsed. I didn’t even know whether I was dead or alive.

Praiz just released a list consisting the collaborations that’ll be featured on his upcoming album, The King Album and the line up of the features is nothing short of royalty.
The singer dropped the long and not so long list on Twitter mentioning the big names in every genre that he intends to pull into his sound starting from Igberipapa one of Bayelsa, Timaya, to Phyno, Olamide, Wizkid, Sarkodie, Stonebwoy and a mix of Burna and Ikechukwu in one track.
Going by the title of the Album, The King Album, it seems Praiz has handpicked who he considers King in every genre. from pop to rap down to dancehall and Ghanaian vibes, which seems like a pretty smart decision where marketing is concerned. This album will have fans from different genre and fans of different artistes listening because their favourite artistes are on it.
Reactions have since trailed this release as some feel he’s switching because he can no longer sing, some express concerns that Davido didn’t make it to the list of Kings, while a majority of the responses are excitement over the possibility of such body of work. In response to this reaction, Praiz assures fans that he cannot bend. Although it looks like he wanted to say “he can bend” to show his flexibility while in the issue of Davido not making it to the list, Praiz replied that he’s fine with the list the way it is, which might, in other words, mean whatever you see it be.
